การสร้างเครือข่ายคอมพิวเตอร์จะเริ่มจากเครือข่ายขนาดเล็กก่อนตามขนาดธุรกิจขององค์กร เมื่อธุรกิจมีการขยายตัวเครือข่ายก็ขยายตัวใหญ่ตามขนาดขององค์กร เพื่อรองรับงานของพนักงานที่เพิ่มขึ้น สำหรับการสร้างเครือข่ายครั้งแรกนั้นส่วนใหญ่จะประกอบด้วยเซิร์ฟเวอร์ 1-2 เครื่อง และคอมพิวเตอร์ที่เชื่อมต่อเข้ากันเป็นระบบเครือข่ายประมาณ 5-20 เครื่อง เชื่อมต่อเป็นเครือข่ายแบบอีเทอร์เน็ต และอาจจะมีเชื่อมต่อเข้ากับอินเทอร์เน็ตโดยอาจจะใช้โมเด็ม 1-2 ตัว และสายโทรศัพท์ ซึ่งเมื่อเชื่อมต่อเป็นเครือข่ายแล้วผู้ใช้สามารถแชร์เอกสารต่าง ๆ เช่น ไฟล์เวิร์ด เอ็กเซล หรือเพาเวอร์พอยท์ หรือแม้กระทั่งรายงานต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวกับลูกค้า เมื่อต้องการติดต่อกับโลกภายนอกหรืออินเทอร์เน็ตก็สามารถทำได้ ดังนั้น จึงสามารถรับส่งอีเมล และทำการแชร์อุปกรณ์ต่าง ๆ เช่น เครื่องพิมพ์ ฮาร์ดดิสก์ เครื่องบันทึกแผ่นซีดี เป็นต้น
